The Kind Diet: Review

The Kind Diet by Alicia Silverstone

Alicia Silverstone is beautiful, talented, kind ~ and a New York Times Bestselling book author!

At first skeptical (how many healthy lifestyle books are there to choose from?), I wanted to learn more about Alicia's book before making a decision so I watched her speak at Google: Kind Diet @ Google  . She is knowledgeable and passionate and real. I was immediately impressed.
(by the way, how cool would it be if all workplaces invited authors in to talk about their books! Now back to the book...)

diet (noun): a way of living, or thinking, a day's journey.
Interestingly, from Greek, also means  'a mode of living' or 'to direct one's own life'.

With a foreword by Neal D. Barnard, MD and preface by Sir Paul McCartney, I knew I was embarking on an amazing journey. This is not a diet book, it is about eating foods that are kind for you and the planet. The author details how food gets from the field (or pasture) to your plate and the resources used to make that happen. (And there are a lot of resources used for meat production...).

Alicia details food that is kind (for your body and for the planet) vs. food that is nasty, weighs the options of going vegetarian - or vegan - and explains how you can get all of the required nutrients regardless of your choice. For those of you interested in a more serious change, she details the macrobiotic "superhero" diet in terms that the rest of us can understand.

Although Alicia is vegan - her book explains her journey from steak-lover to beautiful veggie in a kind, surprisingly non-judgmental way - which makes us love Alicia even more! She encourages incorporating some of these ideas into your daily life at a pace that feels right for you. This book is not without humor and honesty - stories of friends and family, once skeptical of the changes she was making, now choosing to make these changes in their own lives. And the recipe section is delicious -we cannot stop eating the Crispy Peanut Butter Treats...

If you are an athlete? There is a section on that too. Several high-performing vegan athletes are profiled.

Alicia's self-created website, The Kind Life, blogs current eco-friendly content, contains recipes, and gives readers a chance to interact through a forum for those living the kind life (called 'kind-lifers'. Genius!)

If you are interested in this topic or just want to learn more about Alicia and her cause, I suggest picking up The Kind Diet.  Check this book out here.

I recommend this book.
